A Chess Club For All

AGM
Our AGM next Tues, the 28th, is usually quite a lively affair. It's one of the few occasions where we can all get together. We make the important decisions, based upon members responses, on the teams we will have and the competitions we will enter next season. Do please attend if you can.

Social Evening
The club's summer social is on Tuesday 12th July at the Hertford Club. This is a great opportunity to get together as a club and we hope as many players as possible will attend. There is food and drink and if it's fine we'll be in the garden. Please book your place with Corinne.

Club Championships
Congratulations to Paul who in the play-off beat Simon to win the Open Championship. Earlier, George and Dwijen drew in the U1800 which meant George won this category. Well done to him too.
The U1600 is still to be decided. Mike currently leads but should Steve beat Richard in the final game then he will join Mike in joint first place and another play-off will be necessary to determine the winner.
The U1400 was won by Mati.

Regarding the game that follows, Andrew says "Yesterday, I was very pleased to meet 13 year old Mati for the first time, along with his dad. I congratulated him on winning the U1400 championship and naturally I challenged him to a game. He mated me in 7 moves! And I didn’t even see the final move. It’s called the Blackburne Shilling Gambit."

In the position below from Hertford 2's last match of the season against Borehamwood, Duncan, against a 2159 rated opponent, played e6. His opponent took with the Bishop and Duncan, now a pawn down, continued Nf3 and eventually lost. Instead of Nf3, what could Duncan have played which would have given him a winning advantage?
