24/09/20 The deciding match, between Mike and Alan, of this season's scalps competition was a very close thing. With 3 secs to go Alan only just found the winning move. This event is very popular with our club players, and its all thanks to Mike for proposing and running it so smoothly. Here's looking forward to next season's event.
15/09/20 Lewisham defeated Hertford by 7½ to 4½ in this 12 board online match.
11/08/20 14 attended the AGM held on Zoom. With no over-the-board chess on the horizon, the club has entered 3 teams (19 players)in 4NCL's Online second season. Dave Rudd is the leader and the 3 team captains are Andrew, Steve and Alan. First matches are on Tuesday 25th August.

16/05/20 Ex Hertford player Svetlana Sucikova wins the women's final of the English Online Blitz Championships.
07/05/20 Hertford narrowly beat Watford 6 - 5 in an online match hosted by lichess. Full result here.
Chess Scalps
Chess Scalps is back - an online social competition on Thursday evenings from 7.45 pm in the Hertford Chess Club room on lichess.
Each player starts with 30 minutes or 25 mins plus 10 seconds a move, on the clock. If player A beats player B then A can be said to have taken B’s scalp.
If A beats B twice he doesn't get two scalps. That would be greedy. But if, the following week, B beats A, not only does he win his scalp back
but he can boast he has now won A's scalp. A player can win or lose several scalps - they're only virtual after all.
We keep track of the number of games played and the number of scalps currently held. Those two numbers are multiplied together to give a points count.
No scalps change hands (or heads) for a drawn game but players are rewarded with a bonus half point. The bonus is added to the 'plays' count.
We are keen to encourage social chess at Hertford Chess Club so we reward players for playing (as well winning).
The competition is very flexible: play as many, or as few,
games as you like. Just come and play! Make sure the result of your scalp games reaches Mike Humeniuk please.
Last season the always competitive Laskeys came out tops. Richard finished first, a late rally giving him 200 points and 8 scalps. Mark finished second on 162 points but with 9 scalps. In third place was the early leader, Alan, a long way behind on 75 points.

Club Players
Jan 3rd - 5th Gerald finished joint 4th with 3½/5 in the Minor category of the Shropshire Congress. He won a grading prize!
October Corinne has taken over the captaincy of the County U160 Team. She replaces Mike Price who did it for many years.
Sep 27th - 29th Gerald finished 3rd in the Foundation category of the Northumberland Congress.
Sep 21st - 22nd Paul was runner up and Alan joint second in The Capel, Burn & Bunce Tournament held at the Hertford Club. Jeff and Brian also took part. Jeff, playing his first competitive game for 3 years,
beat Alan depriving him of sole second place. Well done Jeff!
June 7th - 9th Paul scored 2/5 in the Open section of the South Lakes Chess Congress held in Kendal.
May 17th - 19th Corinne scored 2/5 in the Intermediate section of the Frome Chess Congress.
May 18th Alan won his game in the ECF County Championships Q-F but Herts lost the match against Worcestershire 6 - 10.
April 6th - 7th Paul, Simon Morris, Alan and Brian played in the St Albans Congress. Simon did best, finishing joint in the Intermediate tournament.
March 21st Corinne won the Tom Wright Trophy scoring 4½/6 (the best performance) for the Herts U160 team this season. The team finished second in the East Anglia County Championships.
As a result they qualify for the ECF final stages. However, the difficulty finding enough players may result in the Herts U160 team declining the ECF invitation this season.
March 17th Corinne scored 1½/2 for the county
U160 team.
February 23rd Mark Buswell, Simon Morris, Alan Brewis and Brian Kirby represented Hertford in the EACU Team Championships
at Bury St Edmunds, winning their first match and losing their second.
February 17th Corinne and Simon turned out for the second time this weekend, on this occasion for the
U160 team. The format here is two matches in one day played in Newmarket.
February 16th Four Hertford players came to help the
U140 county team, after a plea from the captain. Simon and Duncan won, whilst Corinne and John lost in their match against Essex.
February 9th Mark, Alan and John helped
Herts beat Surrey 7½ - 4½ in Cheam, South London, scoring a win, a draw and a win respectively.
February 8th Mike H, Duncan, Alan, Andrew and Mark attended the Hertford U3A Sci-Tech Group talk 'Relativity for the layman' by Ron Hulman. Ron successfuly demonstrated that the
concepts of relativity are understandable to most people if explained logically and without maths. It seems that
along with bird watching and cycling our chess club has a third special interest group - physics.
January 26th Corinne was one of only two players to score full point in
Herts u140 match against Kent. Result Herts 6½ - 9½ Kent.
